Underwater Target Shooting, a fusion of adrenaline and precision

Imagine yourself underwater, with a fixed or mobile target waiting for you. Your weapon is ready, your breath is calm, and your fins are perfectly adjusted to your feet. You're prepared to challenge precision and speed. Welcome to the captivating world of underwater target shooting, a sport that skillfully blends technical skills, breath-holding mastery, and extreme concentration.

origins

Underwater target shooting has roots dating back to the first half of the 20th century, where it emerged as a winter training activity for spearfishers and as one of the many new competitive disciplines in the evolution of underwater diving leisure.

The first documented practice of underwater target shooting dates back to 1935 when a target shooting and fin swimming competition was held at the Tourelles swimming pool in Paris. At that time, this activity was seen as a means to keep skills sharp during the winter months and to promote camaraderie among divers.

In its early stages, underwater target shooting sometimes involved vertical shots from the surface to the bottom, at depths ranging from 10 to 15 meters. This primitive approach evolved over time to become a more sophisticated discipline, placing greater emphasis on precision and competition.

Events

Underwater target shooting offers a varied range of individual and team events, testing participants' skills and resilience.

  • Precision: Competitors must make 10 precise shots underwater, maintaining a distance of 3 meters between the arrow tip and the target. Points are awarded based on impacts, with penalties for exceeding time or distance.

  • Biathlon: This event combines an underwater course with target shooting. Competitors swim a distance underwater before stopping to make a precise shot. The final result depends on the elapsed time and the accuracy of the shots, testing performance under pressure.

  • Super Biathlon: This event demands endurance and precision, combining an underwater course with rapid target shooting. Competitors must achieve a minimum number of shots in a specific area to validate their time.

  • Relay: Teams of four members take turns on a timed course similar to the super biathlon. Each member makes two shots at the target, aiming to achieve a specific number of impacts within a set time. This event involves the coordination and precision of each team member in a competitive environment.

choosing fins

Choosing the right fins is crucial for excelling in underwater target shooting. For precision events, long and flexible fins are preferable. They allow for smooth movement while consuming minimal energy, essential for maintaining a stable heart rate. However, for speed events or biathlons, shorter and more maneuverable fins may be preferred. The choice of fin stiffness will also depend on the diver's build and musculature.

A quality foot pocket is equally essential. It should ensure optimal transmission of leg energy to the fin, contributing to the shooter's overall performance.

Underwater target shooting is a mental and physical challenge that requires rigorous training, unwavering concentration, and quality equipment.

At Breier, we take pride in supporting athletes in their quest for excellence by providing high-performance fins, crafted in France with passion and expertise.
