Discovering Underwater Rugby

Underwater rugby is a relatively unknown sport, but it is gaining popularity all over the world. It first appeared in 1961 in Cologne, Germany. Created to make diving training more fun, it has since been adopted in many other countries.

How do we play?

This sport is played in teams of 12 players, 6 of whom are in the water, with 2 referees underwater and 1 on the surface. The players wear masks, fins and snorkels: a simple equipment that makes it accessible to all. The goal of the game is to score points by placing the ball in the opponent's basket, while avoiding being countered by the opponents. Opposing players must prevent the action from taking place by holding the ball carrier or obstructing with their bodies.

How does it work?

It is a very intense game, the apneas are short, from 15 to 20 seconds. It is the only ball sport that is played in 3 dimensions, your opponent can come from anywhere!
You have to be comfortable underwater but this sport can be practiced by everyone, whatever your age or shape and many clubs have mixed teams. As players cannot communicate underwater, it requires excellent coordination and a strong tactical sense.

It is a sport that can also be practiced in natural environment and it is then necessary to manage some invading supporters: dolphin, seals and ... sharks

Who runs the sport ?

This practice is supervised by the national federations and then directed and standardized at the international level by the CMAS.

There are many leading teams throughout the world, notably in France, Germany, the Nordic countries, etc. These teams regularly take part in international competitions, such as the World Championships and the CMAS World Games.

Underwater rugby is an amazing sport. Increasingly popular due to its fun aspect and especially its ease of access (low financial cost to start), it is certain that this sport will continue to attract more and more fans and talented players in the years to come.

In 2023, you will be able to attend the world championships in July, which will be held in Quebec.
